Mary Therese Winifred Robinson was born on May 21, 1944, in Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland. Growing up in a socially conscious family, she developed a deep commitment to justice and equality from an early age. After studying law at Trinity College Dublin, Robinson embarked on a successful career as a barrister.

In 1969, she married fellow law graduate and future Irish President, Nicholas Robinson. Their shared passion for social change inspired them to advocate for human rights and progressive policies.

Robinson's political career began in 1977 when she was elected to the Seanad Éireann, Ireland's upper house of parliament. As a senator, she championed issues such as legal aid, women's rights, and environmental protection.

During her term, Robinson focused on promoting a more just and equitable Ireland, addressing issues like poverty, homelessness, and discrimination against marginalized communities.

Internationally, she played a pivotal role in the global campaign for human rights, particularly for women and girls. She actively supported the United Nations' Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action on Human Rights, calling for the elimination of all forms of violence against women.

In 2002, Robinson was elected President of Realizing Rights: The Ethical Globalization Initiative. This organization focuses on promoting human rights and sustainable development in the context of globalization.
