I was born in the shadow of the nuclear bomb. My father was a scientist who worked on the Manhattan Project, and I grew up with a keen awareness of the destructive power of these weapons. As a young idealist, I believed that nuclear weapons were necessary to deter war and protect our way of life. But as I got older and learned more about the realities of nuclear warfare, I came to believe that these weapons were a threat to our very existence.

I began my career in arms control in the early 1980s, at a time when the Cold War was at its height. The United States and the Soviet Union were engaged in a dangerous game of nuclear brinkmanship, each side threatening to use its nuclear arsenal to destroy the other. I worked on a number of initiatives to reduce the risk of nuclear war, including the INF Treaty, which eliminated intermediate-range nuclear missiles from Europe.

After the Cold War ended, I continued to work on nuclear disarmament. I served as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, where I led the negotiations on the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty. I also worked on the START I and START II treaties, which reduced the number of strategic nuclear weapons deployed by the United States and Russia.

Today, the world is facing a new nuclear threat. North Korea is developing nuclear weapons and missiles that could reach the United States. Iran is also suspected of developing nuclear weapons. And Russia is modernizing its nuclear arsenal.

The threat of nuclear war is once again real. But I believe that we can avoid a nuclear catastrophe. We need to work together to strengthen the nuclear nonproliferation regime, reduce the number of nuclear weapons in the world, and build a world free of nuclear weapons.

I have dedicated my life to the cause of nuclear disarmament. It has been a long and winding road, but I believe that we are making progress. We have reduced the number of nuclear weapons in the world by more than 80% since the height of the Cold War. And we have created a global norm against the use of nuclear weapons.

But our work is not yet finished. We need to continue to work together to build a world free of nuclear weapons. It is the only way to ensure a safe and secure future for our planet.

## The Challenges of Nuclear Disarmament

Nuclear disarmament is a complex and challenging task. There are a number of obstacles that we need to overcome, including:

* The security concerns of nuclear-weapon states.
