Gender-based violence (GBV) is a serious problem in Canada, affecting women of all ages, races, religions, and socioeconomic backgrounds. It includes physical, sexual, emotional, and psychological abuse, as well as stalking and harassment.

The Scope of the Problem

According to Statistics Canada, in 2019, there were over 170,000 incidents of police-reported violence against women in Canada. This number is likely much higher, as many cases go unreported.

Indigenous women are particularly vulnerable to gendered violence. They are more likely to experience violence than non-Indigenous women, and they are more likely to be killed by their partners.

The Impacts of Gendered Violence

Gendered violence has a devastating impact on women's lives. It can cause physical injuries, emotional trauma, and psychological distress. It can also lead to lost wages, unemployment, and homelessness.

In some cases, gendered violence can be fatal. In 2019, there were 158 femicides in Canada. This means that, on average, one woman is killed by her partner every three days.

What Can Be Done to Address Gendered Violence?

There is no easy solution to the problem of gendered violence. However, there are a number of things that can be done to address the issue, including:

  • Increasing funding for prevention and support services
  • Improving access to justice for victims of gendered violence
  • Educating the public about gendered violence
  • Challenging the attitudes and beliefs that perpetuate gendered violence

Gendered violence is a serious problem in Canada that has a devastating impact on women's lives. It is essential that we work together to address this issue and create a safer and more equitable society for all.
