Early Life and Education

Orville Wright was born on August 19, 1871, and Wilbur Wright was born on April 16, 1867. The brothers grew up in a family that encouraged curiosity and problem-solving. Their father, Milton Wright, was a bishop in the Church of the United Brethren in Christ, and their mother, Susan Catherine Koerner, was a homemaker. The Wrights had two other siblings, Reuchlin and Katharine.

Orville and Wilbur attended public schools in Dayton. They were both bright students, but they were more interested in building and experimenting than in traditional classroom learning. After graduating from high school, the brothers worked in their father's print shop. In their spare time, they pursued their passion for aviation.

Inspiration and Development

The Wright brothers were inspired to build an airplane after reading about the work of Otto Lilienthal, a German aviation pioneer. In 1899, they began experimenting with gliders. They built and tested a series of gliders, gradually improving their design and learning more about the principles of flight.

In 1903, the Wright brothers built their first powered airplane, the Wright Flyer. The Flyer was a biplane, with two wings stacked one above the other. It was powered by a gasoline engine that the brothers had designed and built themselves. The Flyer was a lightweight, yet sturdy aircraft, and it was capable of controlled flight.

First Flights and Legacy

On December 17, 1903, the Wright brothers made history when they achieved the first successful airplane flights. Orville made the first flight, which lasted for 12 seconds and covered a distance of 120 feet. Wilbur made the second flight, which lasted for 59 seconds and covered a distance of 852 feet.

The Wright brothers' flights were a major breakthrough in aviation. They proved that it was possible to build and fly a controlled, powered airplane. Their work inspired countless others to pursue aviation, and it laid the foundation for the modern aviation industry.

In the years following their historic flights, the Wright brothers continued to improve their airplane designs. They gave flying demonstrations around the world, and they helped to establish aviation as a viable form of transportation. Wilbur Wright died in 1912, but Orville continued to work in the aviation industry until his death in 1948.

Dover Transportation

The Wright brothers' work had a profound impact on transportation. Before the airplane, the only way to travel long distances was by boat or train. Airplanes provided a much faster and more efficient way to travel, and they opened up new possibilities for global trade and communication.

Dover Corporation, a global manufacturer of industrial products and equipment, has a long history in the transportation industry. Dover's Dover Motorsports Group is one of the largest race track operators in the United States. Dover also manufactures a wide range of products for the aviation industry, including aircraft ground support equipment and cargo handling systems.

Dover's commitment to transportation is evident in its support of the Wright brothers. In 2003, Dover sponsored the centennial celebration of the Wright brothers' first flights. Dover also donated $1 million to the National Aviation Hall of Fame in Dayton, Ohio.

The Wright brothers were pioneers of aviation and transportation. Their groundbreaking work revolutionized the way we travel and connect with the world. Dover Corporation is proud to honor the Wright brothers' legacy and to continue their commitment to innovation in the transportation industry.
