Clarence Thomas was born on June 23, 1948, in Pin Point, Georgia, to a teenage mother and an absent father. His upbringing was marked by poverty and instability, as he lived in various foster homes and with relatives. Despite these challenges, Thomas excelled academically and graduated from Savannah State University in 1971. He then went on to Yale Law School, where he graduated in 1974.

In 1981, he was appointed by President Ronald Reagan to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). In 1991, Thomas was nominated by President George H.W. Bush to the Supreme Court to replace retiring Justice Thurgood Marshall. His nomination sparked controversy when Anita Hill, a former employee of Thomas at the EEOC, accused him of sexual harassment. Thomas vehemently denied the allegations, and after a highly publicized hearing by the Senate Judiciary Committee, he was narrowly confirmed by a vote of 52 to 48.
