One of the most harrowing accounts is that of Edith Russell, a first-class passenger who was traveling with her husband and two children. Russell described how she was awakened by a loud noise and felt the ship shuddering violently.

"I jumped out of bed and ran to my husband's cabin," Russell recalled. "He was already dressed and told me to get the children and go up on deck."

Russell and her children made their way to the boat deck, where they boarded lifeboat 11. The lifeboat was lowered into the water, and Russell and her children were rowed away from the sinking ship.
