Growing Up in Chicago

Royko was born in Chicago in 1932. His parents were Polish immigrants, and they struggled to make ends meet during the Great Depression. Royko grew up in a tough neighborhood, and he often got into fights. He was also a good student, and he graduated from high school with honors.

After high school, Royko attended the University of Illinois at Chicago. He studied journalism, but he dropped out after a few years. He then worked a variety of jobs, including as a cab driver, a bartender, and a steelworker.

Starting Out in Journalism

In 1961, Royko got his first job in journalism. He was hired as a reporter for the Chicago Daily News. He quickly made a name for himself with his sharp writing and his ability to connect with readers. In 1963, he won a Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of the Chicago mayoral election.

Royko left the Daily News in 1967 to join the Chicago Tribune. He wrote a column for the Tribune for the rest of his career. His column was syndicated to newspapers across the country, and he became one of the most widely read columnists in the United States.

A Chicago Original

Royko was a true Chicago original. He loved the city, and he was always willing to fight for its people. He was a champion of the underdog, and he was not afraid to speak his mind. Royko's column was a must-read for anyone who wanted to understand Chicago.

Royko died in 1997 at the age of 65. He is buried in Graceland Cemetery in Chicago. His legacy lives on in his writing, which continues to inspire and entertain readers today.

Quotes from Mike Royko

  • "Chicago is a city that's always changing, but it's also a city that's always the same. It's a city of neighborhoods, of hard-working people, and of big dreams. It's a city that I love."
  • "The best way to learn about Chicago is to get lost in it. Walk the streets, talk to the people, and experience the city for yourself. You'll never forget it."
  • "Chicago is a city of contradictions. It's a city of great wealth and great poverty. It's a city of beautiful architecture and ugly slums. It's a city of hope and despair. But it's also a city of dreams. And that's what makes it so special."

Mike Royko was a gifted writer and a true Chicago original. His column was a must-read for anyone who wanted to understand the city. Royko's legacy lives on in his writing, which continues to inspire and entertain readers today.
